Face Each Day With Courage

by Ben Armacost

When you think of courage, what comes to mind? Perhaps you think of Tony Curtis, one of the silver screen's greatest swashbucklers. Or maybe you think of Weary Dunlop, the great Australian wartime hero whose courage inspires us even today. If you are into sport, you might bring to mind any of our young Olympians who will stand face-to-face with the world's finest athletes.

But what about the modern day business leader? So often we find ourselves being threatened by things such as competition, financial stress, criticism, and unmet expectations. These things hit us hard, sometimes knocking us down and blowing away our confidence. When this happens, discouragement sets in and our productivity starts to drop off the charts. Sound familiar?

What every leader needs today is courage. To have courage doesn't mean you don't have fears. Rather, courage is the ability to persist in spite of your fears.

What Gives People Courage?

  1. Knowledge and awareness of the circumstances. Fear is often the result of ignorance. Be informed and stay current.
  2. Hope of a reward. Know what you're aiming for and work to achieve it. Your hard work will be worth the effort.
  3. Complete devotion to the task. It was Henry Ford who said, "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal." Learn to stay focussed on what's important.
  4. Protection and the assurance of safety.
  5. Trusting in someone bigger than yourself. Remember David and Goliath? The little guy won because he trusted someone bigger than Goliath.
  6. Certainty of the outcome. When you are sure that things will end well, your confidence will soar!

Listen to these words of en-couragement from the Bible: "Do not be afraid of your enemies or lose courage or panic. The Lord your God is going with you, and He will give you victory." Deut 20:3-4 (GNB)

Stick with it, and don't lose hope!
