The Value of a Smile

by Ben Armacost

Believe it or not, one of the most valuable tools in the business world is one you probably take for granted. You seldom notice it yourself, but everyone else sees it every day. It is so powerful that it can even make the difference between failure or success. And here's the best news of all–-it's free!

How important is a smile? Think about that new customer who wanders into your life. Your smile gives a first impression of warmth, acceptance, and friendliness. Accompanied by a genuine greeting, it tells that person he or she is important. Without a smile you are likely to appear cold, uninterested, and even pretentious. In today's business environment, you simply can't afford to turn off a customer that quickly.

What about your existing clients? A warm, genuine smile says "I'm glad to see you again" even before you have a chance to say it verbally. It communicates happiness and cements the friendship. A bright, cheerful facial expression will help your customer relax and feel good about doing business with you. Your smile speaks louder than your words!

The Bible reminds us how important our smile is to our acquaintances: "When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them." (Job 29.24)

Your smile is indeed precious. Be a shining light to those around you today. Don't forget to smile, smile, smile!
