Achieving 20-20 Vision

by Ben Armacost

When Disney World was opened in Florida many years ago, a great big ribbon-cutting ceremony was held. People from everywhere gathered to celebrate, along with all the dignitaries from the Disney organisation–everyone, that is, except Walt Disney. The mastermind behind the Disney legend had died by time of the ceremony. Mike Vance, one of Disney's creative designers, was among those on the platform. As the ceremony got underway, someone standing next to Vance leaned over and commented, "Isn't it a shame that Walt couldn't see this day?" Vance replied without hesitation, "He did see this day–that's why we are all here!"

One thing that distinguishes successful leaders from ordinary ones is VISION. Simply said, vision is the ability to visualise your future. But it isn't something mystical or mysterious, limited to the leadership "elite." Any leader can be visionary. It has been wisely said that vision is not the ability to see the invisible; vision is seeing what other people overlook.

There are 4 things vision does for us:

  1. Shows a direction. Vision is the compass that points us the right way.
  2. Identifies a destiny. Vision shows us where we will end up, so we can focus our efforts and avoid wasting our time on unnecessary work.
  3. Gives us drive. When you can see the big picture, it inspires you with a passion that ignites you to action. This motivation gives us the energy to make things happen!
  4. Results in delight. What can be more exciting than the fulfilment of your dreams?

The problem with most of us is that when we dream, we don't dream big enough. We tend to settle for mediocre results. We trust in what we can do for ourselves rather than what God can do. Consider this little prayer voiced by Michelangelo: "Lord, grant that I may always desire more than I can accomplish."

What will your business look like in 10 years? Where is your life headed? How about your family? Take some time over the next few weeks to look ahead and consider what your future will look like–then think about what it could look like. What you see may radically change your life!

Don't forget the importance of vision! "Where there is no vision, the people perish." Prov 29.18
